I attended this years North American Hairstyling Awards.

I paid $95 to attend.

I should have spent that money at the roulette wheel and tried to sneak in.

Bumble & Bumble… Gone retail?

Saw this article on BTC.com and thought it was telling. I always new that this was comming where a salon brand would try to blur the line between salon distribution and department store type retail counters. Well, it is a sad day. If this mode of distribution and promotion becomes successful, how long until there are not any pure salon retail professional lines?

As hair professionals we should rise up and stop the whoring of the profession by retail manufacturers. Boycott the lines that are sold in places that are not salons (diverted, cosmetic stores, department stores).

This post is really making me analyze my own retail space and salon concept and what I am willing to accept as a salon professional. Looks like I’m going to be getting rid of a few lines and will have to quit working for another line that I really like. Even though it sucks that these lines have products that I really like, I am making the move to a professional product that respects my business and doesn’t compete with me directly and sell behind my back, or as in this case, in front of my face.

This got me thinking, the guy has a store that only sells 4 different pizzas and does them to the best of his ability. This the the way that I want to set up my store. I do specific types of hair and those are the only things that I’m going to do and I will do them to the best of my obsessive ability. No extensions, no waxing, no nails, no facials, no skin care. Just hair. Done well….
